This route can be walked from either end, from Dolgellau, leave the town square heading towards Fairbourne, after ½ mile turn left, follow signs to Cader Idris. From the car park cross the road and follow a well walked trail heading south. The route known as the "Pony Path" climbs steeply up to the ridge line, then its a (wind swept) walk along the ridge to the summit. From Minfford, leave the A487, join the B4405, park 100m on the right (toilets). The trail leave from the car park, climbing amongst pine trees and grazing sheep before opening out onto more exposed terrain. This route, known as the "Minfford Path" is also well walked and easy to follow. The trail winds around the Minfford Craig, where there are good views down into Llyn Cau. The path winds round Minfford Craig, then descends briefly, before climbing again up to the summit.

The walks to Cader Idris should not be attempted in bad weather, there are major drop-offs and cliffs if you leave the path. A primitive mountain bothy provides limited shelter at the summit.
